| Race report from round 6 of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup |
| The last weekend in May saw the sixth round of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup take place at the very fast and challenging Thruxton circuit in Hampshire. |
|
During the previous round at Donington Park, an unfortunate crash in race 1 and a win in race 2 saw Championship leader Kelvin Reilly (In Moto Corse) have his overall lead reduced, with David Wood’s points tally growing and the experienced Francis Williamson (SJ Racing / Bracken) now getting his RC8 really dialled in, the pressure would be on to keep scoring well in this very close title race.
Qualifying at Thruxton went to David Wood who posted a time in the 1.20’s, with a very impressive second place on the grid going to James Edmeades (Redline KTM) who was riding with a broken bone in his hand following a crash at Donington Park the weekend before. Finishing off the front row of the grid was Alastair Fagan from Fast Bikes magazine and Pauli Pekkanen (In Moto Corse).
The hot weather and fast challenging track were great conditions for some really close racing, and the crowds were not disappointed.
As the lights went out David Wood held his lead into the first corner and was almost touched by Alastair Fagan, who lost vital momentum and 8 places due to the incident. Fagan then set about getting those places back, working his way into fourth place where he battled hard for the final podium position with Pauli Pekkanen (In Moto Corse).
Francis Williamson started from 7th position on the grid and made an awesome start moving up to 5th after the first lap and 3rd place by lap 2.
The leading four of David Wood, Pauli Pekkanen, Francis Williamson and Alastair Fagan all hit some impressive pace to made a good gap over the chasing pack. With five laps to go Francis Williamson managed to pass Pekkanen and held on for second place, behind David Wood. The battle for third was even more exciting as Fagan tried time and time again to make a pass on Pekkanen, he was too late on the brakes and overshot the chicane at Club corner. Pekkanen eventually taking third place.
Championship leader Kelvin Reilly took 5th position to add to his points tally, but as the series approaches the half way point and with the next three rounds being double-headers, consistency is the key.
Rounds 7 and 8 of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup will take place at Snetterton on 19-21 June 2009.
