| Race report from rounds 4 & 5 of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup |
| The fantastic Donington Park circuit played host to the British Superbike Championship and rounds 4 and 5 of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup, late May bank holiday weekend. |
|
Qualifying saw some impressive riding with the top four riders posting lap times in the 1.38’s. David Wood lead the pack, ahead of Kelvin Reilly (In Moto Corse) and Ed Smith (Redline KTM) with guest rider and factory Supermoto ace Cristian Iddon qualifying an impressive fourth place.
It was championship leader Kelvin Reilly who made the best start, taking the lead by Regate corner, but a mistake on lap two saw him crash off his bike, leaving David Wood in the lead which he held for the remainder of the 12 lap race.
Further down the field, it was the Redline KTM team of Ed Smith and James Edmeades who impressed making their way through the field from 5th and 6th positions in a battle for the podium. The pair eventually pushed out Finn Pauli Pekkanen (In Moto Corse) for a well deserved 2nd and 3rd.
The second race was the closest fought so far this year. With Reilly’s bike fixed from his previous accident and Cristian Iddon’s setup issues resolved, the three sped off from the line and were never more than a second apart for the duration of the race. The lead changed many times and saw some very late braking and fantastic overtaking manoeuvres.
Further down the field James Edmeades and Ed Smith (Redline KTM) were again working their way through the field, again riding in very close proximity. In a dramatic change of fortune, Edmeades lost the back of his bike on the exit of McLeans, leaving Ed Smith nowhere else to go, the pair collided and were out of the race. Due to the nature of the crash, the race was red flagged and results were taken from the last full lap completed.
Kelvin Reilly took the race win, followed by David Wood in second and the final podium place was taken by Cristian Iddon.
Round 6 of the Focused Event KTM RC8 Super Cup will take place at Thruxton on the 29-31 May.
