Race Report from rounds 11 & 12 of the Focused Events RC8 Super Cup
Rounds 11 & 12 of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup took place at the superb Brands Hatch GP circuit in Kent on 7th – 9th August and with two races taking place over the weekend and only 1 point separating the top three places, a good points score could make or break championship hopes.
Fridays evening practice took place in overcast conditions with all riders looking towards the sky for any hint of rain. It was the Flying Finn Pauli Pekkanen (In Moto Corse) who set the early pace with a 1.33,70 lap in front of his team mate Kelvin Reilly (In Moto Corse) with David Wood (KTM UK) in third, Jonathan Railton (Ducks Racing) came in fourth as the first of the Junior Cup riders.

Saturday morning qualifying took place with fantastic weather and some awesome riding displays from the usual crowd of riders that kept everyone’s eyes glued to the action. Pauli Pekkanen threw down the gauntlet to David Wood with a stunning lap of 1.32.9; Wood took second spot on the front row followed by the impressive youngster Jon Railton in third, with Dave Heal (Littlewood Fencing) taking the remaining front row position from the ever impressive Christian Iddon on the Motorex press machine in 5th place. Surprise of the qualifying came from the ever fast Kelvin Reilly at his local circuit, who only managed a 9th place grid position. David Wood survived a last lap get-off at Hawthorne bend which he entered at about 100mph!

Race one was shown live on Eurosport 2 and took place early Saturday evening in fantastic conditions. Pekkanen grabbed the holeshot and started to run away from the chasing pack of David Wood, Christian Iddon, Jon Railton and Dave Heal. Further back the usual battle between James Edmeades (Redline KTM) and Francis Williamson (SJ Racing) continued with the fast starting Sam Bishop (Kester Cunningham John) joining in. Kelvin Reilly made headway into the pack after a slow start and picked off rider after rider throughout the race. But it was Pekkanen who held on all the way to the flag, followed by David Wood with Christian Iddon taking the final podium place. Reilly made it to 4th at the flag to keep his championship hopes alive. The Junior Cup places went to Sam Bishop followed by Jon Railton and Adam Foster (Fozzy Racing). The fastest lap of the race went to Pekkanen with a lap of 1.32.9, matching his qualifying time.

Race two got off to an early start in front of record crowds at the Kent Circuit. Jon Railton and Christian Iddon took the holeshot going down into Paddock Hill, but on the next corner, Druids, Iddon kept off the brakes that little bit longer and lost the rear, which in turn took down the hard charging Railton and with it the young rider’s Junior Championship lead! This left the door open for David Wood to take charge at the front and open up a near 3 second gap on the chasing pack of Pekkanen, Sam Bishop, Dave Heal, Francis Williamson and James Edmeades. Kelvin Reilly charged through the pack after yet another slow start and mixed it with Edmeades and Williamson before setting his sights on a podium. Again it was a duel between James Edmeades and Francis Williamson including one of the “saves of the season” from Edmeades who had a massive tank slap whilst entering Westfield. Up front it was David Wood who took the win from Pekkanen in 2nd and the hard charging Kelvin Reilly in 3rd. Fastest lap of the race went to Kelvin Reilly with a stunning 1.32.5. Sam Bishop took the win in the Junior Cup after Jon Railton's early exit.

It's still all to play for after Brands Hatch, David Wood leads Pauli Pekkanen by one point going into round 13 of the series with Kelvin Reilly a further 13 points behind his In Moto Corse team mate.

The next round of the Focused Events KTM RC8 Super Cup takes place at the awesome undulating Cadwell Park circuit on 29th - 31st August.
